Projects

HSM Authorisation

Supported the full authorising the German High Speed Milling (HSM) Machine to operate in the UK. The project involved modifying the On-Track Machine (OTM) to allow UK operation. The operational, approvals, compatibility, safety and product acceptance aspects of the project were delivered through a highly integrated programme, orientated to satisfy the requirements and processes of Network Rail, Notified Body, Designated Body and Assessment Body.

Class 321 Mid-Life Upgrade

Senior engineering and approvals support to ensure the modifications and upgrades, introduced to the Class 321 vehicles, comply with the legislative requirements. Led design reviews for work packages to ensure product compliance and orchestrate validation evidence and arguments which were submitted to the verification body (VeBo) for scrutiny and service authorisation.

Traction Motor - Rotor Failure Investigation

Conducted a Finite Element Analysis to identify the root of the problem that is causing a fleet’s traction motor rotor to fail prematurely and devise a suitable solution. The proposed solution was agreed and validated through the application of a series of load conditions that mimic the operation conditions including thermal and rotational velocity conditions.

LEVEL CROSSING RISK ASSESSMENTS - SHEFFIELD TO DONCASTER

Risk assessed a number of level crossings including Holmes Junction, Thrybergh Junction and Denaby Level Crossings in line with CSM-RA Regulation 402/2013. Identified risks were evaluated and mitigation measures were proposed. The assessment was carried out against the existing and aspired operating conditions which include increasing the line speed and electrifications.

CLASS 730 AVENTRA PLATFORM

Provide system engineering support to design, build, test and authorise Class 730’s West Midlands Railway (Metro) and London Northwestern Railway (Long Distance & Outer Suburban) EMU configurations. Systems include cab design and exterior access systems.

TRACK CORRUGATION ANALYSER

Supported an OEM in the mechanical developing of a sophisticated bogie-mounted equipment that has wheels that deploy onto the track to measure rail corrugation, when the OTM the equipment is mounted on, is in “working mode”. FEA report was produced to validate the design against GM/RT2100 and BS EN 13749.

CLASS 158 BOGIE MONITORING SYSTEM

Led the authorisation (engineering safety RA / HAZID / HAZOP and Standard Approvals) of introducing a monitoring system that measures the performance of bogies and wheelsets through a set of bogie mounted equipment and body mounted data collection PC.

C44 GRINDER TRACTION LOCKER

Performed a structural integrity analysis for the rail grinder traction locker against the load conditions specified in BS EN 12663 and generated from the OTM traction system. Design modifications were proposed and implemented in the design process to ensure required structural performance levels are met and subsequently the Standard compliance are demonstrated.
